Crystalline Silica Housekeeping – Construction
Silica Housekeeping is one of the shortest sections in the Silica Standard. As such, it’s really easy to explain, but it will probably be one of the hardest to keep under control.
The housekeeping paragraph simply says that:
- Dry sweeping or brushing cannot be used for cleaning unless there is no other feasible, non-dust generating alternative, and
- Compressed air cannot be used for cleaning unless there is also a vacuum system to effectively capture the dust cloud or there is no other feasible alternative.
Our Recommendation on Housekeeping Involving Silica
Justifying that there is “no other feasible alternative” available might be difficult. In our experience, high cost or lack of convenience usually isn’t sufficient justification. If you decide to use either dry sweeping or compressed air, you will need to document why alternatives are not feasible. This will also be something maintained in your Silica Plan.
